10 Tips for Practicing Mindfulness

Mindfulness means living in the present. The more precise definition as per the Wikipedia is – “Mindfulness is the psychological process of purposely bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgment, which one develops through the practice of meditation and training.”

Mindfulness can be mixed with meditation or it can also be practised in itself.

To do it as meditation:

1. Sit straight

2. Close your eyes

3. Focus on your breath

4. Try to eliminate thoughts, stress and anxiety.

5. As per the habit your mind will wander and you will create thoughts.

6. To eliminate these thoughts don't try to fight with it. All you have to do is not to think on that thought and then slowly and the thought will go away. If thoughts come to you as questions, simply don't answer them.

7. Don't think of the past and future. Stay in the present.

8. If self-blaming thoughts come to you, then try to be gentle on yourself and know that you were not born with a manual so mistakes are bound to happen. Be kind to yourself.

9. Bring your focus on the presence of breath.

10. If the focus goes away then gently bring it back. Don't fight with yourself. Be gentle on yourself.

The ingredients of mindfulness are:

1. Doing one task at a time.

2. Being in the present.

We can practice mindfulness all day long. For that, all we have to do is to do one activity at a time and keep our mind in the present. For example- when you talk to someone, try to talk without any distraction of the phone you have with yourself. When you fill in water in a glass, try to focus on that only.

Mindfulness has many benefits.

1. Reduces Overthinking

2. Alleviates stress

3. Improves memory, concentration, and performance

4. Helps with emotional reactivity.

5. Decreases depression symptoms.

6. Helps to eliminate anxiety

7. Improve general health.
